Enjoy the soothing sounds of the guitar.

Are you in need of some good music this weekend? If you are then you need to head over to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth this Saturday, July 31st. They are hosting the 2010 Guitar Guild Music Festival this week.

Soloduo is a wonderful guitar duo. They have participated in this festival for four years now. They have also been regular faculty of the Fort Worth Guitar Guild workshops.

Soloduo will be playing at 8:00pm this Saturday, July 31st. Tickets are just $25 for general admission.

This is always a wonderful concert. I would definitely suggest you head downtown for some wonderful live music. The Modern Art Museum is only a 20 minute drive from Avery Pointe.

Bare walls make me crazy. They simply don’t make a space feel like home, in my opinion. However, I can’t really afford to cover my walls in art. Something that is probably true for most of us. So how do you add some personality to your apartment without breaking the bank?

One of my favorite ways to spice up my walls is with prints from my life and travels. I find that it really adds a personal feel to my apartment.

Sun setting over the beach

One of my favorite images from my last vacation.

I find Wal-mart is a great place to get photo’s printed for a very reasonable price. 4×6 prints are just $0.09 and they go all the way up to 20×30 poster prints for under $20. They actually do prints on canvas as well, however the prices are a bit higher on those.

Finding fun frames for the images you’ve chosen is the next step for bring some personality to your walls. I have found some great frames at TJ Maxx, Tuesday Morning, and Target. The first two are some of the best places to find super inexpensive frames so long as you don’t mind touching up or repainting them. I have found more them on frame there that needed a little touch-up, but was under $5!

Finally, once your pictures are framed get them up on those blank walls with Command Picture Strips. These things work wonderfully and really do leave your walls undamaged. Just use a few strips for larger frames.

How have you decorated your apartment here at Avery Pointe? Is there a Fort Worth store you would suggest for great decor items for cheap?

Head over to the Fort Worth Stockyard this Saturday, July 24th, for the celebration of the American Cowboy. This annual event is a wonderful way to spend a Saturday. In fact, it has been named the best event of its kind by American Cowboy.

The festivities start at 10:00am with a training demonstration. There will be a Texas art contest, the Fort Worth Cattle Drive, and the Fort Worth Herd CowCamp. There is a big rib eating contest at 2:00pm with a $5 entry fee. The Cowboy Idol finals are from 12:00 to 1:00pm. There is something for everyone on Saturday!

There are a number of great contests in which you can take part.

It’s a bit of a drive up to the Cowtown Coliseum from Avery Pointe, but is entirely worth it! Things will be going on from 10:00am to 4:30pm. It’s a full day of fun.

Have you been to the National Day of the American Cowboy before? Are you planning on going this year?

Jade plant in a pot

Young jade tree

Not only do house plants add color and life to your home, but they can help make the air you breathe cleaner. Multi-purpose plants like aloe are wonderful to have around the house. Especially if you’re as clumsy as I am and burn yourself on hot pans semi-regularly! You get the color and filtering and burn relief all in one pot! I have an aloe plant sitting on my kitchen counter, seriously.

My mother’s always been a bit of a green thumb. Which has probably contributed to my love of indoor plants and growing my own herbs. I have a few jade plants and some ivy that my cat likes to play with, scattered about my apartment. They just add a sense of hominess to my space.

There are quite a few very hardy houseplants that don’t require a green thumb:

  • Jade plants can get big! They can handle everything from filtered light to direct sunlight. Just be careful and watch them for sunburn if you move them into direct sun. They are a succulent, so they only need to be watered once a week or so.
  • Devil’s Ivy will grow most happily in low light and only should be watered about once a week. My cat loves batting at the leaves of this plant.
  • Baby Rubber Plants are also great house plants. They need little water, medium light and are great for filtering the air in your home.

Do you grow any houseplants? What plants would you suggest for your fellow apartment dwellers?

Have you been to a baseball game recently? After all this rain, the weather ahead is looking sunny so this is a great week to get over to the LaGrave Field!

The Fort Worth Cats have a five game home stand starting tomorrow, Tuesday July 13th. The first three games are against the Pensacola Pelicans and the final two are against the Shreveport-Bossier Captains. Tickets to the Cats are always reasonable. You can get general admission tickets for just $6. Plus, parking is just $3-$5!

On Tuesday they will be celebrating Dodger’s birthday! Wednesday is $1 hot dogs at the park. Thursday is thirsty Thursday and they’ll have $2 beers. As always, Friday means fireworks. Saturday is team poster night and a blood drive with the Red Cross.

Is there a better way to spend an evening then cheering on your local baseball team? I think not!

Feeling Artistic?

2 hand painted mugs

The mugs before they were fired

I have a good friend who is just over the top artistically talented. I just astound me sometimes that she went into accounting; I mean come on, who does that? But she has found some very cool things for us to around Fort Worth. The most recent adventure she has found for us is painting our own pottery.

We went to a little place called Brushstrokes in downtown Fort Worth that offers a variety of items and colors for your painting fun. We had a blast! She and I both got our mugs back yesterday and I must say mine actually came out better then I was expecting it to! Her piece is, of course is a work of art. Mine is passably pretty!

If you are looking for a fun way to spend an afternoon or a unique idea for a bridal shower this is your place. They have everything from serving dishes to figurines to wine glasses (which would be prefect for that bridal shower).

I know there are other studios around town which offer similar services, but this is the first one I’ve been to. Have you ever painted a piece of pottery?

If you are anything like me then you have a bit of trouble sticking with a diet and exercise plan. I always make a good plan and have good intentions. I always mean to stick with it. However, I rarely make it past the second week. I just don’t have the discipline I need to make it stick.

Deack of cards sitting on a plate

A single portion of meat should be the size of a deck of cards

So, I’ve been looking for better way’s to motivate myself and track my eating and exercise. I figure if I actually start tracking everything I might actually keep up with it. I looked at a few different websites for this function and have found The Daily Plate at LiveStrong to be my favorite. It lets you record both your food consumption as well as whatever exercise you perform. They have a variety of tools you can use to customize your goals and track your consumption.

I’ve been using it for a month now and have found it to be easy to use. I track the time I spend at the Avery Pointe fitness center and what I’ve been eating. The Daily Plate helps remind me to hit the treadmill as well as to watch what I eat. It has also done a great job of pushing me to stick to my goals.

If you’re looking for a great way to hold yourself accountable to your fitness and nutrition goals, this is a good place to start! Do you track what you eat? What works for you?

Have a Safe and Happy 4th!

The staff at Avery Pointe would like to wish you a very happy Fourth of July weekend! The leasing office will be closed on Sunday, July 5th, and will have holiday hours on Monday, July 5th, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Rainy Day

The weather men are telling us it looks like rain for the entirety of our holiday weekend. I don’t know about you, but I am not inclined to sit at home when I have a long weekend! Fortunately for us there are some great movies that have come out recently. Also, there are some 4th of July sales going on over the weekend as well.

So head out and enjoying shopping or catching a movie and stay dry:

Windsor at the North East mall has 50% off all sale items through Monday, July 5th.

Head over to the Hulen mall for shopping, dinning and movies all in one place! Great way to spend a rainy afternoon.

Old Navy has some great “Star Spangled Deals” going on through Monday, July 5th, at the Ridgmar Mall.

Lane Bryant, also at Ridgmar Mall, is having their semi-annual sale through July 11th.

Do you already have plans for dealing with the dreary weather, or are you just keeping your fingers crossed that we get some sun?
